The birthday card tradition

Jess and Em started this years and years and years ago. In the last few years Jess rekindled it, and It's been going strong. The birthday card tradition requires that you get as many cards as your age, each hand made and decorated. This year Jess made me cards with a nesting theme, each card with a happy thought, a beautiful item. I <3 friends!

I thought it might be nice to bring Michele into the fold. This year I made her cards as well. they are a lot like the ones I made Jess last June, but these have a harvest theme, for her August birthday. Each card has one letter, individually decorated, spelling out a brief birthday wish (click to enlarge). The pear card is regular sized, and has a more personal message (did I remember to write it yet? I hope so...)

Wallingford

Wallingford is a new addition to my favorite places. The fact that it's in Seattle makes it that much better. Housing doesn't open up there as much as it does in Lower Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, or Belltown, but it is now our first choice.

I think things are looking good for a move sometime this Fall. For the non-library position I applied for, I should hear back sometime on or around the 2nd; for the library position, I'll know by the 8th; both interviews went well. Today I talked to someone at the public library about how to apply for their lower & mid level paraprofessional positions, and it was a very encouraging conversation - she used the phrase "shoe in". I'd really love to work with kids in a library. I ascribe to that cheesy old value that children are our future. Well, they are! I'd like to do something positive - other than being a teacher or parent, and this seems like a great way to get involved. But, that process could take a while, so maybe it would be my second Seattle job.

My tummy still hurts. It's been hurting too long to be food poisoning, and it's been more pain that nausea, so I'm starting to wonder if it's stress. I don't think I'm that stressed, but I suppose all of these interviews and applications have brought us through a lot of ups and downs. We'll see.

This is the Wallingford town center. It used to be an elementary school. A really, really, cute one. Now it is home to local businesses, shops, boutiques, and restaurants. Wallingford had an amazing variety of vegetarian food in all types of restaurants. It put San Francisco to shame.

They have a nice little cupcake shop. This variety was basically a smore cupcake, with lightly toasted marshmallow frosting, and a grahamcracker crust below the cake. The baker was taught to make them by Martha Stewart. It was one of the best cupcakes I have ever had. Erik was commenting on how nice it was to try something he felt like we wouldn't be able to make as well. Yummy.

This used furniture store was closed by the time we got there. It looked so full of life in the evening sun.

This is really a picture of Erik's hand.

Summer is all about the amazing clouds.

We saw the most amazing variety of hydrangea. Some of the smallest, and the largest, I've ever seen. This bush wins for most-dense-with-blossoms.

This is the same place you see in the background, up above. It was a bar/restaurant that looked very interesting inside, and had nice outdoor seating. I am a sucker for outdoor seating. I couldn't resist capturing some of the colors, as the lights changed.

Ever just run out of steam?

I woke up early this morning with a runny nose, and tummy ache, feeling all too hot, too cold, achey all over whipped out. I guess it's time to slow down.

I <3 summer & friends

I'm going back to Seattle again this weekend. We'll be there through Monday, I have to come back Monday evening to close up the library. Busy busy busy. This may be my last interview of the summer, and I have a good feeling about it. I think I know what I want to do long term (as well as knowing where I want to be), and this is as good a way as any to get started.

Everyone should invite me to their wedding

Lots of pictures of Robyn's wedding on myspace. Most of our pictures were of children, and I'm not posting Asha pictures here. There's no password protection, and I know of too many bad people who abuse the internet. But, feel free to check them out on myspace, and I may post an edited few here later.

Too hot to blog

This weekend was miserable. 100 degree heat should not be allowed. All was not lost, I did get a hair cut, thanks to the lovely jess, and the kindly folks at blu7. Blu7 rocks. They did a great job. I was pretty unhappy with a hair cut last spring, and had fixed it myself. And, I did not do a great job of it (but it was still better than it was before I fixed it!). So, my hair has had a dubious 2008, and it's finally on the right track. Yay.

Also, go Michael Phelps!

Today,

in no particular order,

  • I read the 3rd volume of Transmetropolitan, and finished The Magicians Nephew.
  • My train was delayed for an hour because a semi was stuck on the train tracks.
  • A bird pooped on my knee.
  • My favorite black leggings finally disintegrated.
  • An old friend surprised me, and became much more open, while I wasn't paying attention.
  • I received birthday wishes through text messages, phone calls, voice messages, people I saw in person, blog posts, myspace comments, facebook comments, and fabulous birthday cards.
  • I dribbled iced peppermint tea down Erik's back.
  • I found five more awesome apartment possibilities in Seattle, that I can't look at now, because I'm back in Eugene.
  • I agonized prematurely about whether or not I want this job, whether or not I want to hold out for the next job, and whether or not I can keep on putting off deciding what I want until the very last possible moment.
  • I itched many, many, many, many mosquito bites.
  • I talked to one of my best friends from senior year... who I haven't talked to since before I've been with Erik... and she remembered that the tragus is one of my favorite piercings.
  • I wore my dress backwards all day long, and loved it.

I can see you

At the museum

Thursday we went to the Legion of Honor. It's mostly old European art. They had a special exhibit on 4 women impressionists. I was a little skeptical, because I've seen soooo many blah boring pictures of mothers and babies. But, some of it was amazing. In particular, Eva Gonzalès and Marie Bracquemond were awesome. Good art gives me the shivers.

I walked into Erik's frame, I'm checking to see if he's done taking pictures. I guess not...

Sam was in love with Chihuly. I think she was ready to take "the sun" home.

I think Chihuly is like an ex-boyfriend for me. He's not a bad guy. We can be nice at parties, meet every now and then and catch up... but the romance is gone. I don't think we can ever get our chemistry back. He's kinda photogenic tho, eh?

We all got really tired by closing time

But that didn't stop me from running around, taking pictures, once we got outside.

San Francisco Ferries are faster than Seattle ferries

But I think I still like the larger Seattle ferries better.
