Marsupials, ho

I've decided to resurrect my long neglected blog, to talk about our experiences with sugar gliders. Many people have asked us questions about them, and I understand why. The information on the web is wildly conflicting! If you do a YouTube search for sugar glider, these are the top two hits:

When we first saw these, we weren't sure what to think. I was intrigued enough not to give up right away, and decided to read a little more. Its true that they require a special diet, and lots of love and attention, they do make noise if they are lonely or depressed, and they are smart enough to get in trouble if left out of their cage unsupervised. They can not be potty trained. And still, the more I read, the more I was hooked. I think most people get into trouble thinking that because they are small and furry, they are like small rodents. The appeal for me, is that they are very much not like small rodents. They are smarter, more social, much more curious, and live five times longer. Have I mentioned that I have a life long obsession with marsupials? Seriously, they are so cool, and so weird.

Eventually, I became convinced that Erik and I could make it work. Convincing Erik took a bit longer... But here we are. We've bought this beautiful pair. We will pick them up on Wednesday afternoon. I'll let you know how it goes! And post a lot of pictures :)

We Make Carpets

I've thought about this a lot, and it's time for a career change. I think I would make an excellent temporary carpet designer. I'd like to start by making one with embroidery floss bobbins, and next sprouts, and after that paint swatches and stamps and beads and goldfish. Somewhere down the road, climbing equipment. They have these small colorful metal things they bang into cliffs, and the ropes are always so bright. But I still need to refine the idea a little bit.

So, if you know of anyone who'd like to sponsor me to obsessively lay out small colorful things in pretty designs all day, please send them my way. I'm ready.

Who's that lady?

"Spruce Girls" on beach wearing spruce wood veneer bathing suits during "Wood Week" to promote products of the Gray Harbor lumber industry, Hoquiam, Washington, ca. 1929

Can you hear it in your head?

Who's that lady (who's that lady)
Beautiful lady (who's that lady)
Lovely lady (who's that lady)
Real fine lady (who's that lady)
Hear me callin' out to you
'Cause it's all that I can do
Your eyes tell me to pursue
But you say look yeah, but don't touch, baby

LoucheLab - fab dishes & illustrations

Late tonight, I discovered LoucheLab on etsy. Now I can no longer imagine life without a set of bird tea cups. How am I going to sleep, with these colorful, vital images running around my head?

Sleeping in Libraries

Erik found this flickr pool and I'm somewhat delighted. I always love to see people sleeping in libraries, there's a certain level of comfort and intimacy needed for it so I always take as a sign of library success. And usually take their picture too.

Ben Branagan

It's been a while since I've posted about an artist. And this may not be the best one to get back into the groove with - I didn't find an organized web page for him. But today, right now, his circles are perfection.

Pillow blanket

I think I've found my next project. I don't know how I made it so long without a pillow blanket.

Only in Kenya

Holy crap, Lions!

Heard this song at Uwajimaya yesterday, and couldn't help feeling very nostalgic.

Walking on...

Today I'd have say it's broken glass

I'm tired of hearing "People never really invent/do/create anything new anymore"

It's just not true... Check out these uses for Bic pens. Old item sure, but new uses also.

Fuck you, penguin

Tavi found this. She's so cool! I'd start here:

Tavi, girl genius

Angie found Tavi's video blog a while ago. I watched a few episodes, thought she's quite clever, and haven't thought about her much since. (I've thought about her room however, on many occasions, which is the most gorgeous shade of green, that Erik and Roberta would never let me use)

Recently Jess stumbled upon Tavi's blog, style rookie. My first reaction was pure and total jealousy. Who gets to be so cool, and self aware at 12? Grrr.

So, she's pretty fab. I'm basically going to sit back and wait for her to take over the world.
